Hmm... Literature... What comes to your mind when you see or hear the word Literature? For me, poems, plays and dramas are my thoughts of literature. I was wrong! Just like how I thought home economics is about cooking and design and technology is about making stuff, they all actually have their own theories!
Last year, I learnt the basic literary devices. I definitely had a hard time memorising! However, you cannot understand literaturewhen you do not even know each devices. For example, “the sun is smiling”. You would definitely look up and see if the sun is really smiling if you did not know that it is actually juat a personification. Literary devices are actually very interesting and can help us to express our feelings in many different ways. Through a simile, methaphor, personification, symbols, sounds, movement, taste, image, and smell. These devices are all classified under ‘imaginery and figurative language’.
Next, moving on to ‘sound devices’. Rhyme, rhythm, alliteration, onomatopoeia, tone. These sound devices are the most interesting ones. It is extremely useful for writing compositions or poems. It brightens up your work and enhances the effect. For example, instead of writing ‘the car crashed’. We can replace it with ‘the car went BOOM!’ . It makes the sentence sound different.
Lastly, we learnt 10 devices that helps us to understand a sentence in literature. If you play around with words, each sentence can have many different meaning. Threrefore, we have to learn these devices to help us interprete what the author/poet is trying to convey to us.
I have so far enjoyed all literature lessons taught by Mrs Woo and will definitely continue to do so in future. Also, I am delighted to know that we had hit and broken the record for charity bazaar! All our hard work has paid off and this event has actually bonded us together even more. The power of team-spirit. Thank you Mrs Woo!!
