Mrs woo wanted us to write this learning log as she knew if she did not make us do it, we will not read our thick set of notes and will not learn a thing. This is an extremely great idea to make us self study at home first before teachning us!
This notes teaches us how to tackle and do unseen poems. While doing, you have to find the who, when, whats, and hows of the poem before getting started or you will face difficulties. When answering questions, explain, describe, comment, give evidence, compare and give your opinions about the poem. Try to use your own words. There are two ways to have an organised answer. Either you do introduction, body then conclusion or point, explaination, evidence then link. When quoting, you shouted keep the quotation short. Quote only phrases or words to show you actually understand the poem.
The next part teaches us how to organise and write an essay. While analysing, comprehend, interpret, identify and reflect on the poem. Write your thoughts down. After that, start writing your essay in this organised manner: introduction, body (which includes point, evidence, elaboration and personal response), conclusion. Quotes used should bed value to the point and not merely repeating the point. Your point should come before the quote for a clearer understanding of what you mean. Do not misinterpret the poem. Irony is very commonly used by poets in their poems. There are two forms of irony, situational and verbal.
I have learnt the basics of answering questions and writing essays based on a poem through this notes. It gave me some knowledge before Mrs Woo teaches us. At least I wont be clueless during lesson and I will not waste other's precious time by asking questions where answers can be found in the notes itself!
