As the director of my Romeo and Juliet group, I was sincerely very nervous since the night before the actual performance. I was afraid that some things will go wrong and will affect our overall performance. However, I worried for nothing. My group did me proud during the performance. Though their faces showed that they were anxious, they did amazingly well. Even better than our normal rehearsals. Group mates like Dewi, Fatimah, Mui Siew, Jing Ying and Kai Leong are quiet in class, I must say that they really did their best by speaking out loud. I would like to thank all of my group mates for taking time and effort to memorise their lines! I feel that the best actor throughout the whole performance is Clarence. He was nervous but acted naturally and successfully made the audiences saw his character through him. Anirwin and Sanjna also did their best to be naturally in love which was not easy. As a gentleman, Justin also worked hard to be a fierce, selfish and shameless Tybalt. At first, I was afraid that Jing Ying and Fatimah will forget to play the music. But they did not. Thanks to everyone, the whole performance went smoothly without any hiccups.

Of course, behind this success, we really put in a lot of hard work. During the June holidays, we were not sure of what to do. We did not meet up at all. Other groups had already started having group meetings and such. So, on the first week of term 3, I called for our first meeting. Communication was a huge problem within my group. When I sent a text message to each of them, only one or two of them will send me a reply. This makes me unsure if they have received my text. When I sent instructions to them, some claim that they did not receive it. Thus a lot of time is wasted. During our first meeting, I assigned them to different task which was suppose to be completed by the next meeting. Due to different time schedules, it was not easy for me to bring everyone together for a meeting. I was utterly disappointed when I asked them to
show me their researches and tasks on the next meeting! None of them completed their task. All of them also did not memorise their lines. I was kind of troubled by this. Over the weekends, I thought of a solution. During the next meeting, I imposed my new rule., the FINE system. Well, money is important to everyone. So… what can they do? Start being responsible. This method really helped me a lot. Everyone was cooperative. Of course, this money is not for my own use. It goes to our “Romeo and Juliet funds”. We used this money to pay for our props, costumes and such. Then, we split the rest of the cost equally. It is more fare this way for those who obey my rules!

On the last Friday of Term 3, I went down to little India myself, without any of my group mates to do some shopping as all of them had their own plans. It is very far and I did not really like the place. But, for my group… haha I walked and shopped the whole little India. Everything was cheap and good. No regrets making my way down. Other than the drama part which we successfully completed, we were not done with the props and costumes by the September holidays. We had Ccas on Monday and Tues. This left us with Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Luckily for us, we do not have many people from band and uniform groups. So, we had better time slots for our meetings. All rehearsals were held at my house. On Wednesday morning, all arrived at my house punctually. We started to do our props. One hour later, we realized we did not have enough materials. So we headed down to Marsling. Our first outing as a group! Sadly, Jing Ying and Fatimah were not with us that day. It was certainly not easy to find Indian stuff from Marsling. But fortunately, we managed to get what we needed. When we reached Marsling, we immediately bought an orange cloth for our table. After walking awhile and buying Sanjna’s blouse, we came across cloth with sequins on it. It was love at first sight. The cloth was absolutely beautiful… and the price was very reasonable.

WE CAME ACROSS...

Watching the other classes performance boosted a little of my group’s confidence. However, we cannot compare and be complacent about this. Still giving our 101%, everything was went smoothly until the day of our final rehearsal. 14 September 2011. I was really worried. We had not done our team sign, salutation, backdrop, music and dance We were supposed to have full dress rehearsal at Clarence’s house just opposite school. We went to my house right after school to get all our materials for the performance. Then, I forgot to bring some materials. As I ran back home to grab all that we needed, I cried. Anxiety took hold of me. But we could not. Snajna had to leave early as she had to travel back. Anirwin had tuition. Jing Ying, for some reasons had to leave too. So we treasured out time and did everything in a short time. We then left a little time for drama. Little, but a lot to us. I would like to thank everyone for their cooperation that day for a good and final rehearsal.

Finally, after 2 months of constant hard work, the day of our performance arrived. We all had a mix of different feelings. It was weird. Everyone was obedient that day. We got up early and met 6 am at Clarence’s house to bring everything to school. The only one who was late was Fatimah. She did not pick up our calls and this made us worried. She replied at 0645. She said she was drying the costumes as all of them were wet due to the rain on the previous day. Thank goodness she arrived on time for school. Thank goodness she arrived on time for school. Thanks to our dearest Mrs Woo, we were given extra time to set everything up and sufficient for another full dress rehearsal. Luckily we were the first to perform. Though we all knew we were ready, we were still naturally scared. 1600. The time we finished performing. The time we knew we had completed our performance without any flaws. The time we knew our hard work has paid off. The wonderful feeling. Romeo and Juliet performance is over. Relived.

I would like to thank Mrs Woo for helping us with our drama and dance, and all my wonderful grouop mates! THANK YOU DEWIFATIMAHSANJNAMUI SIEWJING YINGCLARENCEKAI LEONGJUSTIN

Hmm... Literature... What comes to your mind when you see or hear the word Literature? For me, poems, plays and dramas are my thoughts of literature. I was wrong! Just like how I thought home economics is about cooking and design and technology is about making stuff, they all actually have their own theories!

Last year, I learnt the basic literary devices. I definitely had a hard time memorising! However, you cannot understand literaturewhen you do not even know each devices. For example, “the sun is smiling”. You would definitely look up and see if the sun is really smiling if you did not know that it is actually juat a personification. Literary devices are actually very interesting and can help us to express our feelings in many different ways. Through a simile, methaphor, personification, symbols, sounds, movement, taste, image, and smell. These devices are all classified under ‘imaginery and figurative language’.

Next, moving on to ‘sound devices’. Rhyme, rhythm, alliteration, onomatopoeia, tone. These sound devices are the most interesting ones. It is extremely useful for writing compositions or poems. It brightens up your work and enhances the effect. For example, instead of writing ‘the car crashed’. We can replace it with ‘the car went BOOM!’  . It makes the sentence sound different.

Lastly, we learnt 10 devices that helps us to understand a sentence in literature. If you play around with words, each sentence can have many different meaning. Threrefore, we have to learn these devices to help us interprete what the author/poet is trying to convey to us.

I have so far enjoyed all literature lessons taught by Mrs Woo and will definitely continue to do so in future. Also, I am delighted to know that we had hit and broken the record for charity bazaar! All our hard work has paid off and this event has actually bonded us together even more. The power of team-spirit. Thank you Mrs Woo!!

Mrs woo wanted us to write this learning log as she knew if she did not make us do it, we will not read our thick set of notes and will not learn a thing. This is an extremely great idea to make us self study at home first before teachning us!

This notes teaches us how to tackle and do unseen poems. While doing, you have to find the who, when, whats, and hows of the poem before getting started or you will face difficulties. When answering questions, explain, describe, comment, give evidence, compare and give your opinions about the poem. Try to use your own words. There are two ways to have an organised answer. Either you do introduction, body then conclusion or point, explaination, evidence then link. When quoting, you shouted keep the quotation short. Quote only phrases or words to show you actually understand the poem.

The next part teaches us how to organise and write an essay. While analysing, comprehend, interpret, identify and reflect on the poem. Write your thoughts down. After that, start writing your essay in this organised manner: introduction, body (which includes point, evidence, elaboration and personal response), conclusion. Quotes used should bed value to the point and not merely repeating the point. Your point should come before the quote for a clearer understanding of what you mean. Do not misinterpret the poem. Irony is very commonly used by poets in their poems. There are two forms of irony, situational and verbal.

I have learnt the basics of answering questions and writing essays based on a poem through this notes. It gave me some knowledge before Mrs Woo teaches us. At least I wont be clueless during lesson and I will not waste other's precious time by asking questions where answers can be found in the notes itself!
